Hip Surgery

Hip bone damage can limit your daily activities and prevent you from enjoying a healthy lifestyle. Your doctor may recommend a hip replacement surgical procedure if:

  • You have severe osteoarthritis
  • Medications have little to no effect on your hip bone pain
  • You experience excessive and prolonged morning stiffness
  • You have difficulty walking, sitting, lying down and getting up
  • You have had a hip injury

What to expect for hip surgery

Your hip surgery procedure can last anywhere between 2 to 3 hours. Your anesthesiologist will administer a general anesthetic to numb your lower or whole body.

After the anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon will make an incision and work to remove damaged bone tissue. Once the damaged socket has been completely removed, doctors will secure a new prosthetic socket in place.

Your surgeon may also need to replace the ball on top of your femur joint with a prosthetic ball. After the replacement is complete, your doctor will close the incision and cover it with a sterile bandage.

How to prepare for your orthopedic hip surgical procedure

Discuss the hip surgery with your doctor and surgeons before the surgery. Ask questions so that you understand what they will be doing.

  • Discuss your medical conditions, allergies and the use of drugs with your doctor before scheduling the surgery.
  • Quit tobacco intake to help prepare you for the hip surgery.
  • You will likely need a few blood tests, X-rays and other medical tests to ensure that you are fit for the procedure.
  • Your doctor may recommend discontinuing the use of any blood-thinning medications.
  • Avoid getting any dental work done at least a few weeks before the hip surgery.
  • Your doctor will likely prescribe new medications to address pain and to help you recover faster post-surgery.

Follow-up care for patients

After hip replacement surgery, you will be required to wear a compression stocking to prevent blood clot formation in the legs. You can walk and move with the help of crutches or walkers and will be required to meet with a physical therapist.

The therapist will likely plan out a few exercises targeted at improving your hip mobility and bone strength.
